Your dog will love these homemade gluten-free dog treats; you'll love that they come together in a few minutes with only three ingredients.

Looking down on a baking tray filled with a fresh batch of homemade gluten-free dog treats.

Over the holidays, we adopted a new dog, or as my husband says, we got our dog a dog, lol. She was abandoned in the woods early in her life, and needless to say, she did not have the best diet. Her stomach needed a lot of love to help soothe it and get her healthy. These 3 ingredient dog treats have quickly become one of her favorites when we give her a little treat.

Gluten-free dog treats.

While not all dogs need to be gluten-free, as long as they are still getting the right amounts of protein, fiber, and vitamins in their diet, it won't hurt them and could be good for them. A gluten-free diet in dogs is usually helpful for dogs who have dry, itchy skin. It can also reduce canine allergies, cause less shedding, and help with a shinier coat.

Ingredients.

  • Peanut butter - Most dogs love peanut butter, which is good because it offers a lot of healthy fat and protein.
  • Pumpkin puree - You want to use a plain pumpkin puree and not a pumpkin pie filling for these gluten-free dog treats. Pumpkin adds a flavor as well as being soothing for your dog's digestion and adds fiber and nutrients.
  • Oat flour - For this gluten-free dog treat recipe, I use gluten-free oat flour. Oats add more fiber as well as vitamins and minerals and help these homemade dog treats get crispy when they bake.
Canned pumpkin puree, natural peanut butter and gluten-free oat flour are sitting in some small gray bowls.

Steps.

Step 1. Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

Step 2. Roll out the dough and cut it into desired shapes. Alternatively, you can use a mold and gently push the dough into the pan to pan.

Homemade pumpkin dog treats have been rolled out and are being cut with a small square cutter.

Step 3. Place the individually cut treats onto a baking tray and bake the gluten-free dog treats in the oven until they are lightly golden and crispy.

Step 4. Allow the dog treats to cool completely before storing and sharing them with your dog.

Tips and tricks.

  • Be sure to use an all-natural peanut butter that does not contain added oils or sugars, and be sure to avoid xylitol. This doesn't have to be an expensive kind. For example, the Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter only contains peanuts and salt as ingredients. I found it at my local store for less than $3.00.
  • If you don't have pumpkin puree, you can also use unsweetened apple sauce or mashed bananas. These will both add a little sweetness and fiber.
  • If you can't find gluten-free oat flour, you can make your own by grinding up gluten-free oats. If you are not worried about gluten-free, you can also use regular oats.
  • If your treats get a little dry and are not holding their shape. you can add a little bit of stock to the gluten-free treat dough or use a little water.
  • Shaping homemade dog treats. - You can cut these gluten-free treats into whatever shape you like, big or small. Just note that the baking time will vary slightly depending on how big or small you make them.

Storing homemade dog treats.

  • These homemade dog treats will last in an air-tight container at room temperature for about a week. If you want to store them for longer, you can store them in the fridge for up to two months, or you can freeze them to store them longer.
  • Treats can be served cold from the fridge, but I suggest letting them defrost from the freezer before serving so your dog doesn't risk breaking a tooth.

Serving suggestions.

Just like with most things, serving these three ingredient dog treats should be in moderation, and amounts will vary on the size of the dog treats, the size of the dog, and as well as how your dog tolerates treats. My dogs (both weigh about 45 pounds) tend to get 1-2 a day, depending on what we are doing.
