Homemade Country Breakfast Sausage in a white plate

You won't go back to the store-bought (MSG-filled) sausage again after you try this Easy Homemade Country Breakfast Sausage!

breakfast sausage

Breakfast sausage is one of those foods that we usually buy but never really pay attention to. That is, until you must be gluten-free and start learning to read the labels much closer. I will completely admit, I was guilty of this for the longest time. I mean, it’s breakfast sausage, not bread. Why would there be gluten in it, right?

Well, there can be, and since I know my husband is an absolute lover of all things breakfast and sausage, I had to start making it. He now says this tastes better than the store-bought kind.

Who am I to deprive him of a simple love like breakfast sausage? I mean, it should have been a no-brainer from the start since one of his all-time favorite foods is chicken fried steak, for which you can’t make classic country gravy without sausage. I mean, you could, but that is just not normal.

Is Homemade Breakfast Sausage Healthier?

This recipe is simple and has only a few ingredients that you can clearly understand. Many breakfast sausages have added sugars or possible gluten contamination because of the spices and flavorings used. You won't find any of that in this recipe.

Ingredients in Homemade Country Breakfast Sausage

  • Ground Pork
  • Ground Sage
  • Oregano
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper

How To Make Breakfast Sausage

Combine the spices with the pork and cook in desired shapes. You can make patties, links, or even cook it like any other ground meat and add it to whatever you want the classic breakfast sausage tastes.

Can You Make Breakfast Sausage Ahead Of Time?

Absolutely! This breakfast sausage recipe is really versatile. You can make it ahead of time easily.

  • You can mix the pork and spices, portion it out how you and freeze it raw to use later.
  • Cook the sausage the way you want and then keep it in the fridge to eat throughout the week.
  • If you want longer storage but easy grab-and-go for later, cook the sausage into patties and freeze. They will hold for about six months. Just thaw, reheat, and eat the sausage when you are ready to enjoy them!
