Homemade Chocolate Cappuccino Bombs

Want a fun way to skip the coffee shops this season? Bring the coffee shop home with some fun and festive Homemade Chocolate Cappuccino Bombs instead!

homemade hot chocolate espresso bombs

You've probably seen the hot chocolate bombs floating all around lately. I totally get it, they are tons of fun to see them pop open and reveal all the fun things stuffed inside them and kids, of all ages love them.

Of course, sometimes we want a little something more adult while still being festive and fun, especially this time of year. So instead of the traditional hot chocolate bomb, I'm showing you guys how to amp them up and turn them into the perfect little CAPPUCCINO BOMBS! You read that, right! We are bringing the fun of the season and the coffee shop home this season.

What is it?

Okay, if you haven't seen all the hot chocolate bombs floating around, let me explain. They are really quite simple. They are hallowed chocolate spheres filled with hot chocolate mix or cappuccino powder and fun little add-ins like marshmallows, chocolate pieces, and even crushed candy and sprinkles.

Once the sphere is put together, it is placed into a warm glass of water or milk. As the chocolate starts to melt on the shell, the chocolate bomb opens up, revealing everything inside.

You can then stir it all together and enjoy the drink that has been made.

Why You'll Love These!

  • Easy to Make!
  • Fun to decorate!
  • Delicious and Festive!
  • So many variations!
  • Fun to watch them melt!
  • Perfect for gifting!

What You'll Need - Tools and Ingredients

Chocolate Sphere Mold - There are many different sizes that range from small truffles to more than three inches. I find the 2 ½ inch sphere mold works the best for these.

Small Paint Brush - Not needed but having a small flat pastry brush makes spreading the chocolate over the mold a little easier than a spatula or a spoon.

Chocolate - This is what makes up the shell of the cappuccino bomb. You can use whatever kind you like. I find using both dark and white chocolate yields good results.

Coffee Powder - You can shop online for them or use their store locator to find where they are sold near you.

For these, I used their new holiday flavors, which include fun things like sugar cookies, mocha mint, and even gingerbread.

Fun Add-ins - Get creative here because this what makes these fun to watch them explode. You can use any candy/ sprinkles/ more chocolate/ marshmallows/ caramel inside the bombs. Choose what you think will complement your flavors.

Let's get flavorful!

Lucky for you the Coffee Powder already has fun holiday flavors to choose from but we are still going to amp up the festive fun!

White Chocolate Sugar Cookie

  • White Chocolate Shell + Additional White Chocolate as desired.
  • 3 teaspoon Coffee Powder in Sugar Cookie Flavor
  • Sprinkles of Choice - Have fun with these; think Christmas cookies with all their fun designs!

Mocha Mint - tastic Bombs

  • Chocolate Shell - Feel free to use either milk or dark chocolate, depending on your preference.
  • Peppermint Extract - Optional, but you can add a drop to your chocolate shell to up the peppermint flavor.
  • 3 TSP
  • Coffee Powder in Mocha Mint flavor.
  • Chocolate Candies/ Shaved Chocolates - Have fun with these to stuff inside and make them match whatever theme you want.
  • Peppermints/ Candy Canes - I find these work best if you crush them before adding them into the bombs.

Let's Make Some!

  1. Melt the Chocolate - You can do this in the microwave and a bowl in 15-second increments, stirring the chocolate until it's smooth. If you prefer, you can also do this over a double boiler.
  2. Fill the Mold - This is where the small brush comes in handy. You don't want to make a solid ball, so carefully place a small amount of chocolate into the mold and brush it up the sides, creating a hollow half sphere.
  3. Freeze to Set Up - This should take 5-7 minutes. Note: Do NOT continue if you see holes in the mold you want solid sides to hold before removing them. If you find holes, brush some more chocolate in those areas and refreeze.
  4. Remove - Once the chocolate has set up, invert the mold and gently press the top to help release each half of the spheres onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Fill - Fill a half of the sphere with the ingredients you want.
  6. Seal the Spheres - You can do this a few ways. Warm a plate in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Once the plate is warm, you can gently twist and empty half over the plate flat side down to slightly melt the chocolate. You can then twist the top on to a filled half. You can also use additional melted chocolate around the edges to help seal the cappuccino bombs.
  7. Decorate - Not necessary, but why not? I like to drizzle additional chocolate over them, sprinkle some sprinkles and crushed candy. It makes them fun and gives a little hint to the flavors inside!
  8. Set - I like to let these set up in the freeze one last time.

Tips and Tricks

Don't overheat the chocolate - Believe it, or not chocolate can burn, so keep an eye on it when you are melting it.

Be Patient - Depending on the chocolate and molds used, these can be a little tricky to work with at first. Be patient with them and see what works for you. Remember, you can always refreeze or melt them down.

Storage Tips - These are best stored at room temperature. Chocolate in the fridge can create moisture and condensation, which is not generally recommended with chocolate. The freezer is fine for short periods of time, but not long term as the chocolate can start to take on flavors that might be lingering in there.

Give the Gift of Fun!

These made the perfect little treat to give this season. Wrap them up into some fun cello bags or colorful foil to wrap them into. You can even place them into a festive mug to give as well.

When You're Ready to Enjoy Them!

  1. Simply add a Cappuccino Bomb to a warm glass of water or milk if desired and watch it melt and release the fun that is inside!
  2. Stir until it's creamy, and enjoy!
