Ingredients.

A few simple ingredients are all it takes to make the best crispy sweet potatoes.

  • Sweet potato
  • Avocado oil
  • Spices

Steps.

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes.
  2. Dice the sweet potatoes.
  3. Toss the diced sweet potatoes in a bowl with the avocado oil and spices.
  4. Spread the sweet potatoes onto a baking sheet and roast.
Peel a sweet potato, dice the sweet potato.. Then toss the diced sweet potato in avocado oil and spices, and roast till crispy.

Alternate cooking methods.

This recipe is making crispy sweet potatoes by roasting them in the oven. If you prefer, you can also make these sweet potatoes in the air fryer or even in a skillet on the stove.

Air fryer sweet potatoes.

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes like you would for the oven.
  2. Preheat your air fryer as needed to 400 degrees.
  3. Roast the sweet potatoes in the air fryer for about 7-10 minutes.
  4. Shake the basket and roast for another 7-10 minutes or until the sweet potatoes have tender insides and crunchy edges.

Note: Do NOT overcrowd your air fryer. Crowding the sweet potatoes in the air fryer will cause them to steam and not get crispy.

Recipe inspired by pipingpotcurry air fryer sweet potatoes recipe.

Skillet sweet potatoes.

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes like you would for the oven.
  2. Warm a heavy bottom skillet, like cast iron, over medium to medium-high heat.
  3. Add the sweet potatoes to the hot skillet.
  4. Let the sweet potatoes cook for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Flip the sweet potatoes over and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes.
  6. Continue until the sweet potatoes are tender on the inside with crunchy edges.

Note: You might need to work in batches, so you don't overcrowd the skillet.

Tips and tricks.

  • Use orange or red skinned sweet potatoes. - These sweet potatoes are sweeter and less starchy. These are sometimes mislabeled at the store as yams.
  • Cut the sweet potatoes into equal-sized pieces. - Cutting the sweet potato into equal-sized pieces will help ensure that they cook at the same rate.
  • Peel or don't peel. - This is a personal preference. If you like sweet potatoes with skin on, you don't need to peel them before cooking. If you don't like the skins, go ahead and peel them.
  • Spread out the sweet potatoes. - The biggest reason that sweet potatoes are not getting crispy is that they are overcrowded while being cooked. Giving your sweet potatoes room will keep the sweet potatoes from steaming, which will allow them to get crispy.
  • Extra crispy sweet potatoes. - If you want to ensure extra crispy sweet potatoes, you can soak your cut sweet potatoes in some cold water for about 30-60 minutes. This will remove excess starch from the sweet potatoes, which will allow them to get even crispier. If you really want to make these extra crispy, you can also add 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch with the oil and seasonings to coat the sweet potatoes.

Make ahead.

I love making a big batch of these crispy roasted sweet potatoes to eat on all week. They make the perfect make-ahead veggie to add to everything from breakfast to dinner.

Storing.

Store leftovers in a container in the fridge for up to four days.

Reheating.

To reheat your crispy sweet potatoes, you can warm them up in a skillet. You can also pop them into the oven or air fryer to help them get crispy again since storing them will make them less crispy.

Serving suggestions.

These simple sweet potatoes are delicious on their own as a side dish for your favorite gluten-free dinners. They are a delicious addition to salads, burrito bowls, and buddha bowls.

If you want to take them to the next level, turn these crispy sweet potatoes into the most delicious sweet potato breakfast hash.
