Learn how to Make a Lettuce Wrap Sandwich the Easy Way, just like the restaurants so you can enjoy them whenever you want!
There a LOT of restaurants that advertise having and selling lettuce-wrapped sandwiches. I will admit it is a good thing to a certain degree, especially for those on a specific diet like keto. However, I'm not really one to trust those restaurants to be necessarily gluten-free. I mean, bread crumbs are not always easy to clean up and make sure they aren't hiding places.
That's not to say I don't like a good sandwich with gluten-free bread. But I do LOVE lettuce wrap sandwiches. It's probably my favorite simple lunch and figuring out how to make these like the big restaurants at home, well, that means I make this way more often. I mean, who doesn't want to make things as good as the restaurants do?

Ingredients in a Lettuce Wrap Sandwich
No one likes the same sandwich, so I will say this is more of a technique or style of making a recipe than an actual recipe. However, there are a few basics that you will need to make these.
Lettuce - Stick to a leafy variety that does not have a hard or thicker stem in the middle. This is why I usually avoid romaine for this particular recipe.
What does work:
- Collard Greens (remove any stems if necessary)
- Dinosaur Kale
- Green Leaf or Red Lead Lettuce
- The outer leaves of Iceberg Lettuce
- Butter Lettuce
Fillings:
- Meats
- Cheese
- Vegetables
- Sauces
Parchment Paper: Not an ingredient, but it's the key that holds these together just like the restaurants, so don't skip using it.
Tips and Tricks
Size of Parchment Paper - Keep your parchment paper big enough to layout your wrap but not too big. The more parchment paper you have, the harder it will be to unwrap the sandwich when you are ready to eat it. Trust me, no one wants to bite into parchment paper. Also, always place your ingredients on the parchment paper at an angle. This will help you use less while still being able to secure the wrap.
Overlap the Lettuce - Making sure your lettuce leaves are large and overlapping at the edges will help to make sure your sandwich stays together once it is wrapped. Any places there are gaps will lead to structure areas in your sandwich.
Layer your ingredients - When it comes to lettuce-wrapped sandwiches, it's all about the layers. You don't want your sauce dripping out the side while you are holding it.
Start with layering drier ingredients on top of the lettuce, work your way to the sauce, and then finish with more of the dry ingredients on top before you roll. This will keep the sauce and wetter ingredients (like tomatoes) to the center of the finished sandwich.
How to Roll a Lettuce-Wrapped Sandwich
- Take the edge of the parchment paper and fold it over the wrap, so the side of the lettuce starts to roll. Then tuck the edge of the parchment paper under the opposite side of the lettuce.
- Tightly roll the lettuce wrap, adjusting the parchment paper as needed.
- Once you have about half the wrap rolled, fold in the parchment paper's side pieces to seal the ends like a big envelope.
- Continue rolling the wrap in the parchment paper until it is completely wrapped.
- Cut the lettuce wrap in half at an angle in the center and enjoy!
Can make lettuce wraps ahead of time?
I would say I prefer these made and eaten on the same day. I tend to make these for lunches, or when we are on the river kayaking, so I make them in the mornings, and then they are eaten by lunch. If you want to make them any farther ahead, I will make sure to choose ingredients with less liquid that can make the lettuce wrap get soggy faster.
